Trigger point therapy (or PT) is a massage based technique developed by Drs. Mike Weiss and Michael J. Mastroianni to treat back pain. Trigger points are tiny, focal, pinpoint painful spots found in a tight band of cancellous skeletal muscle at the base of the spine. They frequently accompany chronic low back pain and produce localized pain in a generally referred manner. Trigger points lie within a sheath of fibrous tissue, and are a major cause of pain with normal function. Trigger point therapy seeks to remove them by applying pressure to the exact trigger point(s), or by conducting specific targeted stimulation therapies.
Trigger Point injections are the most popular form of trigger point therapy. In an initial encounter, a therapist may use local heat or cold to stimulate the trigger points using a specialized needle. He will then inject a small amount of diluted corticosteroid into the point or directly into the muscle allowing it to begin to tighten. Depending on the severity of the condition, this injection may be repeated up to several times a week for relief of the pain. The amount of pressure needed will depend upon the individual case and typically can be achieved with one or two needle injections over a half hour.
Another option for trigger points therapy is with tpi. Tpi is a term that refers to tissue penetrating plexus tissue. This tissue may be found in the soft palate, spleen, bladder, or other organs. The injection of a highly diluted corticosteroid into the trigger points found in the soft palate and spleen will allow the structures there to contract, thereby relieving those structures of the pain and triggering a feeling of fullness.
Trigger Point injections into myofascial trigger points can also be accomplished with myofascial release techniques. These techniques involve gently pressing the trigger points in the body so that they become inactive. By doing this, you can allow the muscles to heal themselves and at the same time relieve the pain. With regular use, this technique can drastically reduce the pain of fibromyalgia.
Trigger point therapy and physical therapy go hand in hand. Trigger points in the skeletal muscle can cause contractions in surrounding structures, resulting in a variety of muscular disorders, from edema to cramps. Trigger point treatments can alleviate these symptoms. Trigger point treatments using myofascial release techniques provide excellent results and many people have experienced a substantial reduction in their symptoms. Trigger point therapy can also help prevent further damage to the muscles by applying physical pressure that causes it to contract. Physical therapy will also provide the needed strength to do these procedures effectively.
Trigger point injections can provide a tremendous amount of relief from fibromyalgia, but if you choose to undergo dry needling, it is important to do your research. Many individuals are allergic to collagen injections, but myofascial trigger points injections can work well for most patients. The injections are very small, so you don't have to worry about scarring, and they are generally painless. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, trigger point injections may be just what you need to break free from the pain.
