The third installment of the popular Maya the Bee: The Golden Orb tells the story of a spirited young girl who lives with her grandmother. When an escaped convict captures their village, the happy family must learn how to survive. With help from an unlikely new friend, the Bee sisters must fight to stay on top of the threat. Maya the Bee - voiced by Alyssa Milano - has always been the lovable, strong-willed live-in sister of Willi, but in this film, she becomes the leader. The Golden Orb follows the familial relationship between the Bee sisters and delves deeper into the lives of their relatives and friends. The movie, which was directed by Alex Cross, also stars Liv Tyler, Christopher Walken, and Annette Benning.
Maya and Willi are thrown into a deep hole by a grumpy old man named Grumbacher (Philip Seymour Hoffman). He threatens to expose their fairy-tale heritage unless they help him find the legendary Golden Idol, which has secretly been buried somewhere in their village. With help coming in from both sides, the Bee sisters must work together to survive. But can they save the village and everyone they know as well?
If you like your animated movies with a little humor, then The Golden Orb will surely appeal to you. After all, it's a movie about a Golden Idol who wants to be discovered. The animation quality of the movie is fairly good. However, aside from the cartoonish looks and the occasionally comical scenes, the real strength of the movie is found in the performances of the three leads, namely Maya, Willi, and Agnes.
The book of the same name, written by Holly Perkins, is also available on audio. Although it is only audio, the book is actually a very enjoyable read. In fact, after finishing the book, I wished that I could hear the story behind the creation of such a beloved character. And of course, that's what the movie did very well! I especially liked the part when Willi and Maya were reflecting back on the meeting of the three Royal Stars. The final scene, in which they meet again was also very moving.
I'm not going to lie to you: The Golden Orb didn't make my night as I had hoped it would. The storyline and some of the dialogues did not make me laugh. On the other hand, I definitely grew to love the main characters, especially Maya. I do think, however, that the real strength of the book lies in the core message - that life really is too short, and that we should enjoy every moment we have.
Overall, The Golden Orb isn't a movie that everyone should see. If you like action-packed stories with a touch of mysticism, then this book will be right up your alley. I, however, would recommend this to those who find humor in a little girl's perspective on life. It is a book that adults can enjoy as well without giving it a second look. For fans of H. P. Lovecraft, I would definitely recommend The Golden Orb! As for me, I'm set to get my next book in the series: Queen of the Damned!
