Hitman's Wife is one of the best movies to come out in 2021. It's a high-quality crime thriller that will stay on your mind long after you've gotten over the feeling of seeing the movie. Based on the Yomi Ono detective series, Hitman's Wife follows the wife of an eminent Japanese organized crime figure (Takeshi Funakoshi) who is found dead, apparently killed by one of his own men (Kazunoko). With the help of a friend and ex-cop, a Hong Kong-based private investigator (Hung Chau) is sent to Tokyo to solve the case.
The movie begins with an intense and long shot showing the entrance of the target's house. A heavily-guarded gatehouse guards the entrance and we cut to a long shot of a very heavily-padded and unconscious figure lying on the ground. We then pan across the compound to another set of doors where another figure is being questioned by two men. Then we pan down to a few more guards outside the gatehouse. Then we move back to the entrance where the victim has been shot.
The Hitman's Wife Bodyguard is very suspenseful. There is always the chance that you don't see what happens to the target because he's being very careful, but once he gives you the slip, you're not sure if it's suicide or murder. The setup is so perfect that you get the feeling that this could happen anytime. When the policewoman tells the hitman's wife (Tsaoi Chau) that they have to protect their son from this" masked thief," we immediately feel the tension build as they both race down the road towards the front door. The bodyguards have one word of warning for the wife: "Don't call the police."
What makes this movie even more amazing is that the actors are incredibly good at what they do. From the first time I saw Hung Chau in action, I thought he was so perfect that I wanted to make my film just like him. Tsaoi Chau turns in one of the best performances I've seen out of anyone this year and the director makes an already great movie even better. He gets that authentic Hong Kong style that we all love and does it in a way that doesn't over-power the film but yet manages to maintain its own identity.
If you want a great action scene that will stay on your mind after you've turned the TV off, this is it. One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when the Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard runs up to the car and finds the money in the backseat. He doesn't stop to get a look at the car, just jumps right in front of it with his gun drawn. It's one of those scenes that I could watch again and it wouldn't get any less intense. The choreography of this scene alone is worth the price of admission. Not only that, but Chow is simply fantastic in the role.
I would definitely recommend this movie if you're looking for a good Chinese martial arts movie like Kill Bill or Jackie Chan's The Protector. But don't let that fool you into thinking that this is like those two movies. This movie is its own entity, with its own set of characters and story. It manages to be both entertaining and thrilling without going over the top, and that's why I think it's such a fine movie.
