Eggs Run is a thrilling, humorous and suspenseful film directed by Gabriel Riva Palacio Alatriste. In fact, it ranks as the third most successful Mexican film of all time behind Citizen Rubina and Granada. It's a beautiful story of a family (and dog) set in Mexico. The movie takes place in the small town of Los Muertos as a result of a family dispute that leaves a town boy (Claudio Lotteria) with a fractured memory.
Gabriel Riva is a celebrated director who has written and directed numerous other movies, including a handful of TV shows. He made his feature debut with this movie, which came out after he wrote and directed Anamanaguing, which went on to become one of the best-selling films of 2021. What makes Eggs Run even more special is that it stars both Angelina Jolie and Steve McQueen, two of the biggest stars of today.
I really enjoyed watching the two beautiful women execute a series of acrobatic moves in a beautiful sequence that had me glued to the screen. The storyline is engaging and emotional, especially when you consider that the main character (egg donor) loses her own life during an experimental procedure in a laboratory. One wonders if she could have ever been able to complete the mission if her life was threatened in any way. Regardless, her sacrifice establishes her as a strong and intelligent human being, placing her firmly into the role of protagonist for the rest of the film.
What I most enjoyed was watching the relationship between Grandpa (voiced by Joaquin Phoenix), and his grandson (Daniel Bullock). This family has always been a little different than the others, but they remain true to their own roots, loving and supporting each other. When Grandpa passes away, he leaves his grandchild a huge gift - an egg - which he refers to as his legacy. When this egg is stolen, Grandma sets out to find it's whereabouts using her investigative skills, enlisting the aid of some new people, including Steve (Jared Rushton), whose adventurous spirit comes in very handy. As you can expect from a film starring two of today's hottest celebrities, the film had its fair share of celebrity cameos, and you may even be familiar with some of them.
Eggs Run did a nice job of introducing a contemporary cast and does so while still maintaining a strong Christian message. While some of the story lines are touched, and given a bit more substance, overall the movie felt a bit too generic. It may not be exactly what you are looking for, but if you are a big fan of the cult classic "Eggs," you should probably give this version a miss. I would recommend giving it a miss if you are not a fan of Eggs Run (which is not much of a surprise).
In summary... Eggs Run is... alright. It's not the greatest movie ever made, nor is it the most innovative. But if you are looking for a Christian-based family film about old age, reincarnation, chickens, the Easter Bunny, Mickey Mouse, and your standard family man with some mystic powers, Eggs Run might be worth a look. However, if you are looking for a completely original and unique movie starring Michael Caine, Jared Rushton, or whoever else you prefer, you will most likely be disappointed.
