This is a rather simple review of the recent anime series, You Should Have Left Your Man by Mitsuhiro Arita. The story centers around a girl who falls in love with a "dark" guy who isn't exactly someone you would consider a gentleman. Although there isn't a whole lot of action, this series is more about what happens when a normal person with average abilities and a normal mind has to go out of his way to solve problems.
The story starts off in a dark and dingy office park in Tokyo, where Mitsuhiro Arita works at a white collar job and helps out his neighbor by cleaning his house, so that he can sleep at night instead of stumbling through the cold night. As the story progresses, Mitsuhiro finds himself with his own troubles with an unseen villain named Yukio Suzuki. As a result, he feels the need to act to solve things instead of just go with the flow.
Yukio is more than just someone who takes advantage of others; he is someone who is extremely talented and also lives with his family. There are also problems with people who try to make the biggest splash without doing anything useful, and as a result, Mitsuhiro decides to help people before even considering a job. Despite this, his neighbor is not an easy mark to take out of his life. Yukio is the main cause of Mitsuhiro's interest, but is also the main cause of the chaos he causes.
He has a pet lizard called Lili Baka who is quite colorful and pretty cute. She serves as a source of comfort for him and he also has an acquaintance who is named Ryo Matsumoto. Matsumoto is shown to be an ordinary man who is kind and caring, and as the series progresses, he falls in love with Lili. Matsumoto is very competent and is quite handsome, but he doesn't necessarily fit in with the rest of the characters in the series.
Lili's other friends include Murasaki Shirato, a cat-like girl that actually shares her name with the hero of the anime, and his classmate Chiaki Natsume. Natsume is also somewhat of a headstrong girl who has no problems in riling up others. The other characters often join in on their disputes and they aren't necessarily bad people, but they are lacking in one way or another.
While the series focuses on the problems between the main characters, Lili becomes one of the more interesting ones as she slowly learns about the way the world works. It isn't much of a story, but it also isn't one that gets left by the wayside either. The conflicts are typical for what happens in everyday life. They get pushed out of proportion and then fixed later.
The animation is pretty funny, especially during certain scenes. The art style is fairly simple, but there is still something in the art that makes it stand out from others.
Overall, You Should Have Left Your Man is a refreshing change of pace. Even though it is silly and may not be everyone's cup of tea, it has enough twists and turns to keep the viewers entertained. It also has an interesting plot to go along with its understated humor.
