The Stand In is a short film that plays out like a feverish web-based adventure game for those who have a penchant for mystery and alternative cinema. Concepted by an intriguing group of online video game enthusiasts, The Stand In presents itself as a high-concept Hollywood send-off with something new to offer on female competition and steep price of female stardom. A website called "The Stand In" gives gamers the opportunity to join a pop-culture war against the macho alpha male through a single, interactive video game. For the uninitiated, the game is a first person shooter (FPS) game where players are required to shoot down enemies before they reach a certain number of "frames". The objective of the game is not unlike that of Counter-Strike or overwatch, in that the object is to "kill" the other side before they reach the goal. However, instead of laying out the same old gameplay mechanics, The Stand In puts a unique spin on the concept, making it both interesting and engrossing for its players.
Based on a storyline that centers on futuristic warfare and the coming of a powerful warlord known as The Emperor, players take on the role of an undercover agent who acts as a general guarding a weapons manufacturing facility. The player's orders are to eliminate any opposition, and infiltration of enemy territory is done using a series of jumpsuits that give the player the feel of being part of the action in a Hollywood movie. As one would expect, this turns out to be more complex than it seems at first. The Stand In allows players to customize their character before taking on the objectives of the game itself. This includes access to a wide range of weapons, abilities and gadgets, as well as the opportunity to partake in a variety of multiplayer modes with players from around the world. The Stand In is currently planned for an early release on Steam, but it is unclear if it will be ported to consoles or if the single player component will be self-contained.
The Stand In takes a clever approach to a typical first person shooter. Although it borrows heavily from films such as James Bond, Star Wars and the like, the story is told in a very modern, current day fashion, very much to the point of science fiction. The story is centered on the efforts of a group of terrorists to hijack an orbital weapons platform and use it in an attack on America. One of the characters, named Sam Bain, is an undercover CIA agent that must go undercover in order to infiltrate the terrorist group and retrieve important information for his team. It is through a number of missions that Sam Bain learns more about the nature of the group and the nature of the national security forces trying to protect the world from such a threat.
Despite the fact that The Stand In is an online movie, it still manages to maintain the momentum picked up by Sam Bain's story. The use of a green screen was one of the stand-ins for digital movie effects used to make the action possible on the big screen, and the special effects were more realistic than I had thought they would be. The supporting cast more than made up for the lacking special effects, and the visual and audio work did an excellent job of combining all of the elements of the story into an entertaining movie.
One of the Stand In's many pleasures is Brie Larson as the protagonist, Sam Bain. I have always liked Larson, and The Stand In was no exception. Her appearance was enough to lend the movie its needed energy, and her acting was convincing enough to make audiences interested in what happens next. Larson also has quite the list of movie credits to her name, which is always a plus. In terms of casting, Jennifer Aniston and Michael Caine both gave great performances, but the movie was largely unscripted, which allowed director Eric Heisserer to give his all onto the script.
