Based on the famous book of the same name, Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Journey is the second part in the award-winning Heavenquest franchise. After investigating a series of murders committed by a cult leader named Ahlamine, Thomas and his associate, Jane, travel to Egypt in an attempt to solve the crime. Along the way, they uncover a world-wide conspiracy involving Heaven Quest: A Pilgrim's Journey. Watch online free on Dailymotion and Netflix.
Directed by Greg Berlanti, the film follows the story of Thomas and Jane as they journey across the country in their quest for the legendary "Fountain of youth". They meet the strange Native American boy called prospector while investigating a series of disappearances led by an escaped convict. Meanwhile, Thomas and Jane encounter a pack of vampires and the movie's central conflict is further revealed. Watch online free on Netflix and Dailymotion.
The movie takes place almost 100 years before the events of the first book, Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Prologue, and therefore covers a different time line. Although it was widely hailed upon its release, most critics were not as excited as I was. For one thing, the premise of Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Progrations felt a bit forced, especially compared to what had happened in the first novel. On top of that, the lead character of Thomas, referred to only as "The Lord", seemed a little too generic for the role, even for a fantasy series about a young man who becomes a true king. However, these things did not take away from the movie itself, which I found to be an engrossing and enjoyable to watch.
When Thomas the Tank Engine meets his future pilgrim friend Briar Rosebud at the beginning of the movie, the two immediately have a strong connection. The Lord tells Thomas that he will one day face a challenge in his life, but does not mention any details, other than saying that he is a pilgrim and has done what it takes to become a full-fledged Christian. When the two meet again, Thomas notices something off about Briar, prompting him to question his religion, which he discovers to be only a facade. In the end, Thomas the Tank Engine is thrown into an alternate timeline where everyone except him is gone, and he must team up with his new friends to save England from a nest of vampires and save Queen Anne from an impending attack on her life.
While I found that the story did grow old a bit for the sake of consistency, it is a very entertaining movie overall. It tells a nice story about two very important characters and shows off some fantastic set design, animation, and sound effects. The movie may also have been less successful if it had not been for the performances of Keira Knightley and Jude Law. The three of them combined are very capable of taking anyone by surprise and bringing a lot of heartache and misery to their fans for the rest of their lives.
Hopefully, the studio will consider making a follow-up to Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Progr, because it would bring a lot more depth to the characters and storyline. The last thing that the director needs right now is another movie about a man named Arthur. Hopefully, Keira Knightley and Jude Law will continue to reign as the faces of Christian movies forever. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do next!
