Before I get into the details of the Gretel & Hansel movie, it's important to realize that the only thing they all have in common is that they were originally made by Aryan. Aryan is a company known for releasing horror movies. Their first three horror movies include Starry Eyes, The Three Stooges and They Live.
The original version of this movie is ranked as the twenty-third on their Rotten Tomatoes rating. By my own opinion, I would rank it anywhere from ten to seventeen. That's a lot of movie's worth of drama. In this review, I'll attempt to explain why I think that this movie is superior to all of its predecessors.
Gretel is a pretty ordinary girl who makes a lot of mistakes as a result of her poor parenting. When her family moves from Iowa to Chicago, she struggles to adjust and takes her first steps on the path towards success. This movie provides the viewers with an opportunity to see what happens when someone attempts to change her parents.
After a series of incidents occur involving Gretel, she becomes hypersensitive to anything that could be perceived as a public display of affection. She also constantly blames her parents for her misbehavior. All of this is played out in a very subtle way by the writers.
The movie manages to develop the character in a very realistic manner. They know exactly how that character feels, which makes it very easy for me to take them seriously.
For those that do not know, Game of Thrones is the HBO series featuring George R.R. Martin. My favorite part of this show is when he discusses religion and the issues that it presents. In Gretel & Hansel, we can follow the events of a prominent religious leader's life with similar religious ramifications.
While the plot of the series is of course very similar to that of the movie, the episode's main characters are much different. I found it quite interesting to see what happens when one has to deal with an extreme amount of pain and regret.
By my own assessment, this movie has a higher Rotten Tomatoes rating than any of the other Aryan movies. It provides an excellent lesson in dealing with the type of reality that people must deal with when they're in their thirties.
