Just Mercy is a drama film directed by Mike Mills. It is based on the book Just Mercy by Gillian Flynn.
In the mid-1950s, CIA agent Philip Gough (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is assigned to take out a Russian spy posing as a refugee in San Francisco. He has only two days to accomplish this task before his cover is blown. In that time, a young girl named Anne gets caught up in his mission and becomes pregnant. She also inadvertently stumbles upon an earlier mission where Philip's mentor was responsible for killing her mother.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a good job of playing Philip as a conflicted man with complex reasons for doing what he does. He loves his family dearly but hates himself for being a spy because he knows it means giving up all the freedom and comfort he has.
In a plot twist at the end of the movie, it turns out that Anne's pregnancy is the result of a botched operation, and she gave birth on the roof of a closet. This not only destroys Philip's cover as a Russian spy but jeopardizes the lives of both the baby and her mother. Although he feels guilty about the unborn child, he decides to finish the mission. Now Anne has to take care of her daughter alone and will find it difficult to leave the country.
The movie Just Mercy is another look at espionage and its consequences. The role of Philip Gough is played by John Slattery, who was previously seen in Iron Man and The Imitation Game. As an actor, he has an excellent range and has many great scenes.
The movie has a high production value. There are some spectacular sequences where Philip is chasing down his target. Even though the story is a bit predictable, this is not a bad thing since there is so much suspense. With such a great storyline, it is also good to see some different actors.
Overall, Just Mercy is a good movie. Despite some technical problems at the end, it has good acting and interesting characters. If you like thrillers and dark mysteries, you might find it intriguing.
I give Just Mercy a B+. It is not a perfect movie, but it is a good start. It does offer a good overview of the genre and does a good job of presenting a smartly-written character study.
