If you've already seen the critically acclaimed film The Game, you already know that the award-winning film garnered a huge following and took home some well deserved nominations. Of course The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans follows up on that momentum, and is a more grounded and believable tale than its predecessor. With its two-time greats The Game and True Romance are gone, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans succeeds by broadening the base of the franchise, but maintaining its level of innovation.
The premise of The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans is one that never falters. The plot revolves around Lt. Johnson (played with great charisma by Patrick Fugit), an ex-Marine turned DEA agent, and his effort to arrest a powerful drug lord. A long time friend and ally of Johnson's past was discovered to be linked to the drug ring, and Johnson has been ordered to protect a mysterious and powerful woman named Samantha Cortez. The two work together to apprehend the ring leader, and come out unscathed.
The rest of the plot for The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans is fairly straightforward, but the characters are what make the movie a hit or miss. Since no one knows the story in advance, it's hard to know whether or not a character is going to be a good choice. Fortunately, many of the key players are incredibly compelling, and the supporting cast is more than capable of pulling the scenes together.
The entire series has followed the same basic premise; big city cops face down drug lords. While there is no single drug ring in The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans, the main drug ring does require close cooperation between multiple characters, and to the extent that the movie takes itself seriously, most of the action takes place in an international territory. The gangsters themselves all have a reason to go out of their way to bring these seemingly impossible trials to reality, so they really make for excellent characters.
The Major Issue is whether or not you want to pay for the home entertainment version of a movie. Unfortunately, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans isn't available in any decent format, and you're looking at paying over $50 for a DVD copy. As previously mentioned, many people are going to want to purchase the movie from the online version, so it may be worth it to buy a copy, as this would get you access to the HD format as well.
Despite the flaws of the movie, it's still a good movie. While it isn't perfect, there are moments that give the viewer some real laughs. The acting is exceptional throughout, and the screenplay does a great job of weaving its characters together. It's a shame that the story won't be allowed to continue much longer, but even with all the negatives, I'll still be watching The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans for quite some time.
As for the movie franchise as a whole, I can't help but think that this particular movie should have been the final installment in the series. Now that Fugit has proven himself a powerhouse actor, it would have been easy to tell this story with a twist, and get to the conclusion. Since the writers behind the series are not as skilled, the entire series felt like a random assortment of bad choices.
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans does not earn a higher rating from me, but it did impress me enough to make me want to see the entire series. There are definitely other movies that I'd want to watch, but I won't know that until someone finally makes the sequel to The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans.
